Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young toddler. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she already had her TV debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Her regular work in theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies, that were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
